Ingredients

  • 1 package Beef stewing meat
  • 3 Peeled potatoes
  • 2 Peeled carrots
  • 1 Onion
  • 2 Minced garlic cloves
  • 2 Large bay leaves
  • 2 Tbsp Vegetable oil
  • 3 Tbsp Cornstarch
  • 4 cups Beef stock
  • 2 Tbsp Worcester sauce
  • Salt and pepper

Instructions

Step 1: Brown the Meat

  • First, brown your stewing beef on the stovetop with a small amount of cooking oil.
  • Once you have browned the meat to perfection, place it in the stewing pot, dutch oven or crock pot, depending on the cooking method you prefer to make your stew.

Step 2: Add Ingredients

  • Next, add all the above ingredients to your uncovered cooking pot except carrots, potatoes and cornstarch. We will add these ingredients later.
  • Bring the contents of your pot to a boil, then reduce the heat to medium and let cook for approximately 1.5 hours.

Step 3: Let Simmer

  • Next, reduce the heat to simmer, cover your pot, and let the ingredients simmer on low heat for at least 40 minutes. This method of slow-cooking your beef stew will allow the flavor of the ingredients to seep through the chunks of beef.

Step 4: Add Potatoes and Carrots

  • Once your ingredients have simmered on low heat for at least 40 minutes, it is time to remove the garlic cloves and bay leaves.
  • Next, add your sliced carrots and potatoes to the pot and continue to simmer on low heat for a minimum of 40 minutes or longer to ensure the potatoes and carrots have sufficient time to cook.

Step 5: Thicken Sauce

  • Once your stew has finished simmering, and the potatoes and carrots feel soft to the touch of a fork, it is time to add your cornstarch to the ingredients to thicken the sauce.
  • Add the cornstarch by removing 2 cups of liquid from your cooking pot and placing it in a saucepan on the stovetop.
  • In a separate dish, combine approximately ¼ cup of water with 3 tbsp of cornstarch. Stir vigorously until the mixture is free from lumps. Add the stirred mixture to your pot of sauce on the stovetop and continue to stir.
  • Once the sauce has thickened to your desired consistency, add it to your beef stewing pot. Let the pot simmer until you are ready to devour your yummy meal of home-cooked beef stew.
